Traditional Vezo fishing

Spend a morning with Vezo fishermen, board a traditional outrigger and learn handline and net techniques the local way.

Contenu

Leave at 5:30 a.m. to catch sunrise over Ambatoloaka bay. After a safety briefing, board a motorised outrigger fitted with life jackets and a cool box.

You will learn how to set fine-mesh nets for trevallies, how to work a handline for mackerel and how to read the water colour to locate hunting grounds. Fishermen also share local rules (no-take zones, minimum sizes).

By 9:30 a.m., return to the beach to clean the catch and prepare lunch the traditional way: ginger marinade, coconut fire, stone cooking. Enjoy your meal with green mango salad and coconut rice.

The trip supports a Vezo cooperative; part of the fee funds net maintenance and school programmes.
